Ingrown Hairs After a Brazilian? Let’s Talk About What Happens Between Appointments

You leave your Brazilian appointment feeling smooth. Then, as the hair grows back, a bump appears. If that sounds familiar, you’re not alone—and it doesn’t mean you’ve done something wrong.

An ingrown hair happens when a growing hair curls or becomes trapped beneath the skin. They can show up after many kinds of hair removal, including sugaring. The good news is that your routine between appointments can make a difference.

Give freshly sugared skin time to settle

Right after a Brazilian, your skin may be more sensitive than usual. For the first 24–48 hours, skip workouts, swimming, hot tubs, and saunas. Loose clothing and breathable underwear can also help limit rubbing against the area.

This is the part where I want you to keep things simple. Freshly sugared skin doesn’t need a complicated routine.

Exfoliate gently—and consistently

Once your skin has calmed, exfoliation can help keep dead skin from building up around growing hairs. A gentle scrub or loofah may be part of your routine, but more pressure isn’t better. Scrubbing irritated skin can leave it feeling worse.

The goal is regular, gentle care between appointments. If you’re unsure how often to exfoliate, ask at your next visit so we can tailor the routine to your skin.

Don’t pick at a bump

It’s tempting to try to free a trapped hair yourself. Picking or digging at the skin can increase irritation and may leave a mark. If a bump is painful, spreading, or keeps returning, have it assessed by a healthcare professional.

Keep up with your appointment schedule

For Brazilian sugaring, I usually suggest returning every 4–6 weeks. Hair grows in cycles, so your results and ideal timing are personal. Keeping a schedule also gives us a chance to notice how your skin responds and adjust your care between visits.

Your technique matters, too

At Sugar & Silk, I use the traditional hand method, molding sugar paste against hair growth and removing it with growth. I also pay close attention to changes in direction across the area. There isn’t one pattern that fits every client, which is why I take my time.

No hair removal method can guarantee that you’ll never get an ingrown hair. My approach is to pair careful technique with realistic, manageable aftercare—so you understand your skin and know how to support it.
